Govt to distribute 35.13cr free textbooks in 2018

Live Correspondent: The government will distribute 35,13,26,000 textbooks free of cost among the primary and secondary level students in the academic year of 2018.

Officials said the free textbooks would be distributed among 4,36,98,663 pre-primary, primary, secondary, ibtedayi, dakhil, dakhil vocational and SSC vocational students across the country.

National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) Chairman Prof Narayan Chandra Saha told BSS that the NCTB is working round-the-clock to reach new textbook to educational institutions by November 30 this year.

Referring to the government’s historic decision to distribute free textbooks, he said this has reduced the rate of school dropouts and increased number of students in primary and secondary levels.

The present government started distributing free textbook from 2010 academic year.

Prof Narayan said of the total number of textbooks, 10,36, 24,405 would be distributed among 2,17,21,129 students of Bangla and English versions at the primary level.

A total of 17, 84,73,831 textbooks would be distributed among 1,26,58,400 students of Bangla and English versions at the secondary level, he added.

Prof Narayan said tender process has been completed to prepare 68 lakh 23 thousand 648 copies of textbooks for 34 lakh 11 thousand 14 students at pre-primary and primary levels.

Some 1 lakh 45 thousand 63 copies of textbooks are being prepared for 58 thousand 255 pre-primary and primary level students of five small ethnic groups, he added.

The NTCB sources said a process is underway to give work order to print and bind 10 crore 36 lakh 24 thousand 405 copies of textbooks for 2 crore 17 lakh 21 thousand 129 students at primary level (Bangla and English versions), 17 crore 84 lakh 73 thousand 831 copies of textbooks for 1 crore 26 lakh 58 thousand 400 students at secondary level (Bangla and English versions) and 39 lakh 73 thousand 179 copies of textbooks for 3 lakh 77 thousand 174 students at SSC and Dakhil vocational (trade book) levels.

They said work order has been given to prepare 5 crore 82 lakh 77 thousand 881 copies of books for 54 lakh 71 thousand 728 students at Ebteyadi and Dakhil levels and 8,200 Braille textbooks for 963 visually impaired students.

They also said 36,21,82,245 textbooks were distributed among 4,26,35,929 students of pre-primary, primary, ebtedayee, secondary, dakhil and technical students for the 2017 academic year.

Officials and educationists said Bangladesh has set a rare example in the world through distribution of free textbooks among a large number of students on the first day of January.

They said in the past eight years, Bangladesh made a significant progress in education fulfilling different global targets including achieving gender parity in education before the scheduled time while distribution of books free of cost significantly contributed to checking the dropout rate.
