Live Correspondent: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will raise the issue of the ongoing Rohingya crisis at the 72nd session of United Nations General Assembly, which Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi is not attending this year.

The United Nation’s 72nd General Assembly is scheduled at the UN headquarters in New York, US from September 12 to September 25.

Sources inside the ruling Awami League said at the General Assembly, The Premier will focus on two things: strengthening global support for the ethnic minority group facing persecution by Myanmar security forces and creating pressure on Myanmar to put a stop to the violent crackdown in Rakhine state, home to the Rohingya community.

The objective is to ensure safe and dignified return of the Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh to Myanmar, the sources added.

Sheikh Hasina visited Kutupalong registered refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday. During her visit, she learnt from the new refugees of the atrocities the security forces of Myanmar are committing against them.

Sources claimed she plans to describe her experience at Kutupalong, as well as sharing the latest data from Cox’s Bazar, at the General Assembly.

Meanwhile, Myanmar news agency The Irrawaddy reported that Suu Kyi has decided not to attend the UN General Assembly to focus on internal issues.

As of Tuesday, around 370,000 Rohingya men, women and children are estimated by the UN to have entered Bangladesh in order to escape the military persecution, which started in response to insurgent attacks on Myanmar police outposts and an army base on August 25.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein addressed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday and termed the security operations in Rakhine state as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”
