Entertainment Live: Mostafa Sarwar Farooki, one of the topmost directors of Bangladesh, has cracked a deal with streaming pioneer Netflix.
Two of Farooki’s films , ‘Television’ and ‘Pipra Bidya(Ant Story)’ are set for world-wide release on Netflix on May 15.
This is the first time Netflix decided to choose Bangladeshi films.
The on-demand streaming platform has recently struck this deal with Farooki and proposed to bring some of his films to the platform.
This is the first time Netflix decided to choose Bangladeshi films. Farooki hoped that this is first of many Netflix deals in this country.
The flag-bearer of Bangladeshi cinema said, “I think, this deal will open up many possibilities for Dhallywood. Indian films were in Amazon and Netflix for a long time, it is high time we had some of our creations in this platform.”
The noted director expressed his gratitude towards Impress Telefilms, Star Cineplex and Mogador Film and last but not the least, his audience.
He added, “Very few independent film-makers in this world are as lucky as me to receive such positive feedback and love from people of all classes.”
Farooki urged every Bangladeshi to stream the film on Netflix.
“Even if you have watched the films, please watch them again after their release. It will help Netflix get the message that Bangladesh has also has tremendous viewership and inspire them to release more of our contents.”
‘Television’ is a 2013 comedy drama film starring Shahir Huda Rumi, Chanchal Chowdhury, Mosharraf Karim, and Nusrat Imroz Tisha. The film was selected as the Bangladeshi entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards. On the other hand, Ant Story is another 2013 drama film directed by Farooki and starring Sheena Chohan, Noor Imran Mitu. Both the films have received mixed to positive reviews and have bagged several international awards.
The platform significantly expanded its global footprint to 190 countries, making its Internet TV service available in Bangladesh from January this year.
Notably, Netflix is an American entertainment company which specializes in and provides streaming media and video-on-demand online and DVD by mail. In 2013, Netflix expanded into film and television production, as well as online distribution. Netflix released an estimated 126 original series or films in 2016, more than any other network or cable channel. In January 2017, the company reported having over 93 million subscribers worldwide.
