Chittagong Live: At least fifteen people were hurt as activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling party Awami League, engaged in a clash with police over the construction of a swimming pool in Chittagong’s Outer Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The BCL activists were holding a rally and sit-in programme protesting the construction of the swimming of pool in the stadium area from around 4:00 pm at the city’s Kazir Deuri area.
At one stage, the a clash broke out between police and the BCL activists.
Many were injured in the 45-minute-melee including a few police personnel.
The agitated activists also vandalized quite a number of vehicles.
Later, police police fired some gun shots in the air to bring the situation under control.
However, Nurul Azim Rony, General Secretary of Chittagong Metropolitan Awami League, said that at least eight BCL activists were injured in the clash, including two with bullets fired by police.
“We have long been protesting the construction to save the stadium field. Our demo was also announced beforehand. But police attacked us unjustly,” he said.
“We demand that the guilty police officers be tried for their action,” Rony concluded.
